A police officer allegedly shot his wife more than five times at their home in Kangar, Perlis, yesterday morning, 5 March

According to Berita Harian, the suspect is a Lance Corporal-ranked officer who has been working at the Perlis Police Contingent Headquarters for four years.

Kangar district police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the 6am shooting took place at the couple's residence in Kampung Bendang Baru, Simpang Empat on Jalan Kangar-Alor Star.

"The incident happened after the suspect had just finished his shift. Based on the witness of the incident, his father-in-law, (the suspect) suddenly took out his Walther P99 pistol and shot his wife, identified as Safsufarnisya Salleh, 27 years old.

"The suspect fired more than five shots at close range, hitting the face as well as the left eye and causing the victim to die on the spot," Yusharifuddin told reporters.

After hearing the gunshots, the suspect's father-in-law, mother-in-law, and nephew who lived in the house fled.

The father-in-law called his son to inform him about the incident before contacting the police.

"The police were informed of the incident at 7.26am, went to the victim's house, and found the suspect still present," Yusharifuddin said

"Their (police officers) call for the suspect to surrender proved futile as the assailant remained unresponsive inside the house."

"Police entered the house and found the suspect sitting, still holding the gun in his hand," he added.

New Straits Times reported that the wife's body was found lying on the bed in a room. The suspect was then arrested.

The police are currently investigating the motive of the murder, as it was understood that there was no fight or dispute between the couple who had been married for two years.

The suspect's mental health will be examined.

Speaking to the media today, 6 March, the victim's mother, Che Mas Taha, revealed that Safsufarnisya was five months pregnant at the time of her death

The 63-year-old mother said Safsufarnisya was the youngest of her four children, reported Berita Harian.

She said the suspect was a "good person" whom she considered her son. She said he often helped the family by buying various necessities, including food.

"So, the loss of Safsufarnisya is something difficult for me to accept," Che Mas said.

She also claimed that the suspect is believed to have suffered from depression a few years ago, citing that he had shown erratic behavior prior to this.

"Last Hari Raya Aidiladha, my son-in-law once drove aimlessly on the highway alone until his car ran out of gas.

"When the petrol ran out, he then prayed and sobbed on the side of the highway.

"My daughter had to contact her husband's workplace to locate and bring him home. So I didn't expect it to last until yesterday's incident," she recounted.

The case is currently investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Safsufarnisya's remains will be buried at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Masjid Simpang Empat after the post-mortem process is completed.
