Selangor plans to ban all pet stores from selling cats and dogs, said state executive councillor Ng Sze Han

According to The Star, the Selangor Local Government, Public Transport, and New Village Development Committee chairperson said the move is to encourage people to adopt pets from animal shelters.

"We are still in the midst of finalising the plan... Pet stores can sell pet food instead," Ng said at the Selangor Management of Stray Dogs Forum 2023 on Monday, 12 June.

He added that his constituency in Kinrara has weekly pet adoption drives and about 20 pets are adopted every month.

"If all local councils carry out such programmes, we can help reduce the pet abandonment rate," he said.

Additionally, Ng said the state government has recommended for all local councils to use the netting method, a more humane way, to catch stray dogs

The netting method prevents the dogs from being dragged on the ground, such as with the current looping method, said Ng.

However, he said the looping method could still be used if the animals are in hard-to-reach locations such as under vehicles, small holes, or drains.

Meanwhile, he added that a 'Fur Shelter' will also soon be launched to promote the importance of caring for animal welfare

He said the shelter and education hub will be on a 1.2-hectare plot of land on the border of Subang Jaya, close to Cyberjaya.

"The proposal is also supported by non-governmental organisations and animal lover communities. We must all be aware that animals have the right to protection," he said, as quoted by Selangor Journal.

"It will also include pet-friendly hotels and cafes, clinics and veterinary services, as well as a dog and cat park," he added.
