Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has assured the public that obtaining a firearm licence remains a tedious process that involves stringent vetting and can take years to complete
According to Saifuddin, for every 100 applications, a maximum of three licences are approved.
"On one hand, I receive feedback questioning why the process takes so long — sometimes one to two years — but this itself reflects how thorough the screening process is," he was quoted as saying.
The minister's remarks come following a shooting at a shopping mall in Setia Alam, where a local man in his 30s with past criminal records shot and injured a male janitor over the weekend.
The applications go through multiple levels of screenings
"One level of screening is conducted by Bukit Aman, and another by the ministry," he said.
Further commenting on the approvals, Saifuddin revealed that since assuming his post in December 2022, he has approved only three out of every 100 appeals that were initially rejected by the police.
