A 24-year-old woman in Pahang has been sentenced to two years in prison after she was found guilty of child abuse

According to Astro Awani, Khairunnisa Abdullah attended Kuantan Sessions Court today, 29 September.

Justice Siti Aminah Ghazali sentenced the woman to 24 months in prison as well as a good behaviour bond for three years.

She also has to fulfil 120 hours of community service on top of reporting herself at the Cenderawasih Police Station each month after carrying out her jail sentence.

Khairunnisa admitted that she physically hurt her stepson by pressing a hot knife against his arm

Bernama previously reported that the abuse took place at their family home in Perumahan Ladang Suburban Cenderawasih, Rompin, on 20 September, around 3pm.

Rompin police chief DSP Azari Miskon said that the woman, who works at a farm, used an 8cm knife on her nine-year-old stepson as punishment after he scolded his step-sibling.

He said, "As a punishment, the suspect heated the knife over a gas stove and placed it on the victim's arm causing two scalding marks and bruises were found on the child's chest and thighs."

Her act was exposed when one of the child's school teachers noticed the bruises on his chest and marks on his arm the next day.

The woman pleaded guilty according to Section 31(1)(a) Child Act 2001

The Act states that whoever is found guilty is liable to not more than 20 years of prison, a maximum fine of RM50,000, or both.

Sinar Harian reported that the lawyer representing the accused, Mohd Faizal Hiqram Azmi, requested the minimum prison sentence, citing that it was the woman's first offence and she should be given a chance to change.

However, prosecutor Sharifah Nurul Syuhada Tuan Mamat said that the court should uphold public interests instead of personal interests.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
