Cheah Liek Hou Expresses Interest To Donate Part Of His RM1 Million Reward To Charity
A winner, through and through.
National para shuttler Cheah Liek Hou has expressed interest in donating part of his RM1 million reward for winning a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics to charity
The Paralympian has been promised a RM1 million cash reward under the government's National Sports Incentive Scheme for his achievement.
However, instead of keeping the entire sum for himself, Cheah has vowed to give part of his winnings to local charity organisations.
"The first thing I would like to do is to donate it. I want to give back to society," he told the New Straits Times.
Although he has to yet decide on the charities, Cheah has announced plans to support old folks homes, orphanages, and the disabled
It is reported that this is not the first time Cheah has used his winnings to help others.
In 2020, after winning his first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, he donated part of his RM1 million prize, along with an additional RM100,000 from FWD Takaful, to charitable causes.
Cheah's journey to his second Paralympic gold has not been easy, having endured a series of defeats and a coaching change over the past three years
However, the 36-year-old said he has proven doubters wrong with his ability to bounce back and perform under the guidance of Indonesian coach, Nova Armada.
"Some people doubted if I could defend my Paralympic gold. Now that I've won, I've proven them wrong, and it's incredibly satisfying," he said.
