Gamescom 2024 is off to a great start, with tons of major video game announcements rolling out already

The Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2024 was packed with new game reveals, updated trailers, and release dates for upcoming titles. This year didn't disappoint, delivering dozens of updates, world premieres, and other big announcements within the first two hours.

Here are some of the announcements that have us excited for next year:

1. Genshin Impact is coming to Xbox!

Genshin Impact has been a massive hit for a while now, and it's finally making its way to the Xbox console family. Until now, the game has only been available on PC, PlayStation, and mobile devices, so this is big news for Xbox players.

It's scheduled to launch on Xbox Series consoles on 20 November this year.

2. Get ready to shoot and loot with Borderlands 4

One of the first trailers shown during the main show was a fresh teaser for Borderlands 4, the latest entry in the popular looter-shooter series.

The teaser didn't give away much, showing only some early visuals. It begins with a moon slicing through a crystalline field in space, followed by meteorites crashing down. A bionic hand then lifts a Psycho mask in front of a fire before the trailer cuts to the title logo.

3. Sid Meier's Civilization 7 confirms its release date

Fans of the Civilization series have something to look forward to — Civilization 7 just had its first gameplay reveal, along with a confirmed release date. The game is set to launch on 11 February 2025, and will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

If you opt for the deluxe edition, you'll get to play five days early.

4. Mafia gets a sequel after almost a decade of silence

Fans got their first look at Mafia: The Old Country, the first new entry in the series in nearly a decade. The world premiere trailer was minimalistic, featuring a series of shots from a room filled with various items, including artifacts like a double-barrel shotgun, a prayer card to Saint Rosalia, and a bottle of wine. The focus then shifts to a suited figure stepping onto a balcony, gazing out at a hazy view of Sicily before the title card appears.

Set in early 20th century Sicily during the mafia's early days, The Old Country is being touted as a return to the roots of the Mafia series, though details are still scarce. The game is set to release in 2025, leaving plenty of time for more in-depth trailers and gameplay reveals.

5. The goat experience returns as Goat Simulator: Remastered is announced

During Opening Night Live, it was announced that the original Goat Simulator is getting an official remaster, titled Goat Simulator: Remastered.

While there are already quite a few Goat Simulator games out there, this remaster of the 2014 hit will offer more than just updated graphics. It will also include all the DLCs released for the game, including one that was previously only available on the mobile version.

6. We can finally mark our calendars for Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals made an appearance with a trailer announcing its release date of 6 December 2024. This player-versus-player shooter lets 12 players each pick a hero from Marvel's extensive roster. So far, 25 characters have been confirmed, including Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, Magneto, Venom, and Scarlet Witch. Each hero has unique synergies, making some combinations more powerful.

The game features three Overwatch-inspired modes: Convoy, Domination, and Convergence. The trailer also hinted at Doctor Doom's involvement, with a plotline involving a time paradox where he meets his heroic self from another universe. It's unclear if Doctor Doom will be a playable character, but Marvel Rivals is set to launch on December 6 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

7. Dying Light gets an exciting sequel, completing its trilogy

A third entry in the Dying Light series has been officially announced: Dying Light: The Beast.

While a release date hasn't been set yet, it has been confirmed that Kyle Crane, the protagonist from the original game, will return as a playable character in this new instalment.

8. Monster Hunter Wilds releases a new extended trailer

Monster Hunter Wilds premiered with an action-packed trailer that highlighted both its gameplay and story. The trailer introduced several new and returning beasts, including Lala Barina, a spider with red flowers growing from its thorax, a giant boar with thick skin, and Rey Dau, a lightning-powered wyvern who serves as the region's apex predator.

The game also unveiled two new regions: a desert outpost bustling with merchant stalls and gourmand Palicos, and the Scarlet Forest, a dark area filled with ancient, long-dead trees. The story seems to revolve around Rey Dau, who is likely to be the game's final or penultimate boss. Additionally, a new gameplay mechanic was showcased where monsters can convert sand into glass with their powerful lightning strikes.

Monster Hunter Wilds is set for release in 2025, though no specific date has been provided.
