A 20-year-old man was fined RM800 at the Magistrate's Court in Batu Pahat, Johor today, 17 October, for assaulting his girlfriend

According to the New Straits Times, the incident unfolded last week when the 20-year-old storekeeper Muhamad Nurhaqimi Harun failed to respond to his girlfriend's "Good morning, sayang" WhatsApp message.

Muhamad Nurhaqimi was accused of injuring his 20-year-old girlfriend at a pet shop on Jalan Parit Bilal around 12.15pm on 10 October.

During court proceedings, it was revealed that the girlfriend had brought him lunch at his workplace, but an argument ensued when she expressed her frustration over his lack of response to her message

During the heated verbal exchange, Muhamad Nurhaqimi slapped his girlfriend on the left cheek, causing minor injuries.

The victim sought treatment at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital and lodged a report at the Batu Pahat district police headquarters.

Muhamad Nurhaqimi was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to one year in jail, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, if convicted

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip, while the accused was represented by lawyer Mohd Razak Shariff.

Muhamad Nurhaqimi pleaded guilty after the charge was out to him before Magistrate Suhaila Shafi'uddin.

After hearing submissions from both sides, the court imposed a fine of RM800, with a 14-day prison term in default.
