For many of us, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, which is why we get sooo excited when December approaches!

From all the jolly Christmas tunes to festive treats and snacks, there's just so much JOY all around you.

Plus, not only do you get some much needed time off from work, you'll get to spend said time bonding with your loved ones, doing Christmas-sy things at home. <3

If you're a parent with young children, this time of year may feel even more special, since you'll want them to enjoy the holiday season as much as you did growing up.

Want to start new Christmas traditions with your little ones so they can treasure the memories for years to come?

Here are some family-friendly activities you can enjoy together:

1. Gather the whole family and take a fun holiday card photo

This year, why not send out personalised Christmas cards! All the more reason if you or your kid already have a penchant for photography (even if it's just showcased on your Instagram feeds :P).

You can get a variety of silly props and festive costumes online (hehe, ugly sweaters, anyone?) or at your nearest craft or gift store. Or, get dressed in your holiday finest for a proper photo sesh that will wow even grandma and grandpa! Awww, just imagine your little one in a tiny tuxedo or puffy dress. <3

2. Sing your hearts out in a Christmas-themed karaoke sesh

Hardly anyone can resist singing along to Christmas songs, and it's certainly one of the most joyous things that many of us look forward to.

From classic carols like Jingle Bells and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer to modern staples like Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas, get into the holiday spirit and prepare to belt it out.

If you think regular karaoke is fun, definitely give this holiday-themed version a try. It's fun for the whole family and will surely be a hit with your kids!

3. Curl up with some hot cocoa and an enchanting children's book fit for the festivities

From The Nutcracker to The Elves and the Shoemaker by The Grimm Brothers, your children will adore snuggling up with you and a classic Christmas tale. The holidays are, after all, a time when everyone hits pause on work and school, allowing for quieter moments which avid readers (both adult and children) will appreciate.

Whether you choose to read them your favourite story or a new book you pick out together, you can make the experience extra special by creating a little reading nook by the Christmas tree, complete with paper snowmen or fairy toadstools.

4. Plan a craft session to make DIY ornaments for your Christmas tree and home

Perfect for folks who like to go all out with the decor during the festive season, this year, you can include your kiddos in all the fun too.

You can deck your halls with garlands made out of candy canes, fashion big red Christmas-sy bows for your staircase, or even make personalised tree ornaments according to your child's favourite cartoon.

The best part? You and your children will hold both the memories and crafts dear to your hearts for years to come!

5. Invite the cousins and close family friends over for a Christmas bake off and cookie swap

As the saying goes, the more the merrier! A sentiment your children will surely enjoy, especially if they have cousins living in different states or countries. It's also the perfect time to get older family members to share heirloom recipes for all kinds of festive sweet treats and cookies.

There's nothing more entertaining than some friendly competition during the holidays, so team up with your kids and throw a great family bake-off where you can experiment with flavours like peppermint, ginger, and cinnamon. In the spirit of Christmas, share your creations amongst each other when all is done and dusted!

6. Break out the festive pyjamas and have a family 'sleepover' by the Christmas tree

Have some popcorn ready, put on some cosy socks, and play a chill Christmas movie until everyone falls asleep by the tree. Sleeping bags would add another element of fun, however, thick blankets or roll-up mattresses work just fine too.

As long as it reminds the kids of sleepovers or a camping trip, but with a Christmas twist (and their parents by their side), your children might just look forward to this fun tradition every year.

7. Keep it simple and fun by organising a gleeful candy cane hunt

Just like an Easter egg hunt, but instead of chocolate eggs, hide candy canes around the house instead!

For added excitement, one parent (or ask one of the kids' aunts or uncles, heheh) can leave clues and riddles with every candy cane, which will ultimately lead to a bigger prize — it could be a giant-sized candy cane, a cute little Christmas trinket, or anything you fancy, really.

Depending on how many children you have, you can also split up into teams (preferably with an adult or older child to help guide in each)!
