13-Year-Old Teenager Faces Up To 7 Years In Jail For Robbing E-Hailing Driver
The teenager pleaded not guilty.
A 13-year-old teenager who attempted to stab and rob a 65-year-old e-hailing driver last Monday, 27 November, has been charged at the Sungai Petani Magistrate's court yesterday, 3 December
According to the New Straits Times, the teenager was charged under Section 393 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a punishment of up to seven years in jail and a fine upon conviction.
His identity is withheld, and the proceedings were carried out in-camera, as he is protected under the Child Act 2001 for being a minor.
He is accused of committing the act against e-hailing driver Lee Ang Hie at a roadside in Taman Keladi in Sungai Petani, Kedah at about 6pm last Monday.
He pleaded not guilty, and the court set 17 January 2024 for case mention to allow the teenager to appoint a lawyer.
The 13-year-old was granted bail of RM2,000.
Last week, a one-minute dashcam video went viral, showing the boy purportedly pulling out a 25cm-long knife to stab Lee
Fortunately, the knife landed on Lee's seatbelt, saving him from a stab wound to his heart.
The footage showed Lee grabbing the teenager's hand and biting it, before the suspect ran away following his failed attempt.
According to Sinar Harian, Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Zaidy Che Hassan said the teenager attempted to rob Lee because he was angry at the driver for scolding him and collecting the fare payment.
He was arrested on the same day of the incident.
