Starting 2025, all newly released iPhone models will sport organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays

Citing unnamed sources, Japan's Nikkei newspaper said that television and smartphone makers are switching to OLED displays due to their colour and sharpness quality.

The OLED displays are capable of delivering vivid colours and feature sharper contrast, making them perfect for high-definition videos, which have become a staple today.

Only two companies will not be moving ahead with OLED displays: Japan's Sharp Corp and Japan Display, both from Apple's handset business.

Apple has signalled its push for OLED displays by placing orders for the upcoming iPhone SE models

The orders were placed with China's BOE Technology and South Korea's LG Display, Nikkei reported.

Apple first began using OLED panels on the 2017 iPhone X model. Since then, it began switching to OLED displays gradually for premium iPhone models.

In May, the latest generation of iPad Pro featured OLED displays.

Sharp and Japan Display had been supplying LCDs for the iPhone SE but do not mass produce the OLED displays

A decade ago, before the push for OLED displays, both companies held a 70% share in iPhone displays.

According to the report, Apple, Sharp, Japan Display and LG Display didn't comment on Reuters' queries on the push for OLED displays.

As sales of iPhone devices fall, could the push for producing OLED devices help Apple grab the market share it lost? Only time will tell.
