Microsoft Windows iconic feature, the Control Panel, will be phased out soon

In a support document, Microsoft announced that the 39-year-old feature will be replaced by the Settings App.

Since October 2020, the tech giant has been redirecting Windows users to the Settings app instead of the outdated Control Panel.

"Many of the settings in Control Panel are in the process of being migrated to the Settings app, which offers a more modern and streamlined experience," Microsoft explained in its support document.

The Control Panel, launched with Windows 1.0 in 1985, allows users to adjust various Windows settings

From adding devices and printers to adjusting date and time settings, personalising desktops, and removing unwanted programs, the Control Panel has served many essential functions.

However, the Settings app, introduced with Windows 8 in 2012, has gradually taken over many of these tasks.

In fact, unlike the Control Panel, the Settings app is easier to access from Windows' Start menu.

Microsoft hasn't revealed the date when it'll phase out the Control Panel

In its support document, the tech giant didn't specify when the nostalgic feature will get the boot.

However, with Microsoft openly prioritising the Settings app, you can expect the Control Panel feature to be removed in the coming months.

The removal of the Control Panel will mark the end of an era and many Windows users will no doubt remember the feature fondly — or perhaps with indifference. We hope it's the former.
