An elderly woman in Shanghai has decided to leave her substantial fortune of 20 million yuan (RM13.3 million) exclusively to her beloved cats and dogs, while excluding her adult children from the inheritance

Known only as Liu, her will initially had provisions for her three children, including money and property. However, she rescinded her decision after she became ill and her kids did not visit, contact, or care for her.

She expressed that only her pets have been there for her during her old age, leading her to redirect her wealth towards their welfare and that of their future offspring, reported South China Morning Post.

In China, it is not legal to leave your money directly to pets. As such, Liu appointed a local veterinary clinic as the administrator of her inheritance, responsible for overseeing the wellbeing of her furbabies.

Officials from the China Will Registration Centre have alerted Liu to the risks involved in naming a vet clinic as the administrator of her inheritance, and have advised her to appoint a person she trusts to supervise the clinic and oversee the management of the funds.

Chen Kai, an official from the Will Registration Centre headquarters in Beijing, adds, "We told Auntie Liu that if her children change their attitude towards her, she could always alter her will again."

Liu's unique decision has ignited a lively online discussion in China about family dynamics and inheritance

Some applaud her for cutting out her children who have not fulfilled their duties to their mother, while others express disappointment and sadness in her decision.
