[VIDEO] Era FM DJs Visit Batu Caves To Make Amends After Backlash Over Viral Video
The three DJs are under police investigation for mocking the sacred Thaipusam kavadi ritual.
Three DJs from Era FM, who are currently under police investigation for ridiculing the sacred Thaipusam kavadi ritual, were seen at the Batu Caves temple complex
The DJs — Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jazmin, and Radin Amir Affendy — sought to express their regrets to Malaysia Council of Hindu Temples and Hindu Associations president Sivakumar Nadarajah.
Their visit came after Era FM issued an apology on social media in response to the backlash.
Sivakumar, who is also the son of Batu Caves temple chairperson Tan Sri Datuk Dr R Nadarajah, later shared a video of their interaction on his Instagram and TikTok accounts yesterday, 4 March.
The video has since gone viral, amassing over 3.5 million views on TikTok.
In the footage, Nabil is heard saying, "We are truly sorry for what happened. [It was] an internal [activity]."
He then continues, "Biasalah, [when people] are gathered like that...," before being interrupted by Sivakumar, who points out that the issue ceased to be "internal" the moment it was posted on Era FM's official social media accounts.
Nabil then expressed hope that "this video can make everybody cool a bit lah".
Sivakumar did not mince his words, making it clear that an apology would not suffice
After you've had your fun, now you want to apologise? It's too late for that.
"Based on your own values, you may think an apology is enough, but the issue you've created is unforgivable. Regardless, action must be taken against you, and you will all have to accept it," he told them.
The Batu Caves temple committee member, who is also MIC treasurer-general, emphasised that while personal forgiveness may be given, consequences must still follow.
"If you ask me personally, what you did was absolutely wrong — correct?
"This mistake is unforgivable, but if you still want to apologise, that's your choice. The fact is, this has already become a public matter. Had you kept it internal and not uploaded it to social media, it wouldn't have escalated. But now, consequences are necessary. You can't blame me for that.
"We live in a multiracial country, and we all need to understand that actions have consequences. On the grounds of humanity, we may forgive you — but action must be taken to send a clear message," he added.
Meanwhil, Nabil, Azad, and Radin are being investigated
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that an investigation paper has been opened under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The investigation comes after six police reports were lodged over the video.
Razarudin said one of the reports was lodged by a 44-year-old engineer, who claimed the DJs were "playing on racial sensitivities".
Amid the controversy, the three DJs have been taken off the air.
In a statement, Astro Audio said it viewed the situation seriously and had taken immediate action.
"After careful consideration, we have decided to take the three individuals off-air until further notice while we review the situation internally. We will always be aware of things happening around us," it said.
