Sabahan Who Stole Groceries To Feed His Wife & 6 Kids Sentenced To Jail For 5 Months
The man, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty.
On Tuesday, 21 February, the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate's Court sentenced a father of six to five months in jail for stealing groceries
35-year-old Rozzaimi Yunnus was found by security guards behaving suspiciously at 5.30pm on 22 December last year when he wanted to leave the Bataras supermarket in Wawasan Plaza.
Prosecuting officer Insp Kelvan Elson Maik told the court that Rozzaimi's suspicious behaviour was first noticed in video surveillance as he stuffed groceries into a trolley and tried walking out without paying.
The security guards found that the father of six had stolen RM664.70 worth of groceries. They detained and handed him to the police after he failed to show a receipt for the items in the trolley.
Rozzaimi, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty
When magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles asked the man why he stole the groceries, Rozzaimi said that it was for his family that included his six children and wife, who is a housewife.
During mitigation, Rozzaimi requested leniency, saying that it was his first offence, which falls under Section 380 of the Penal Code. It provides for a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine, upon conviction.
Kelvan, however, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence against Rozzaimi and asked for the food items to be returned to the rightful owner, reported New Straits Times.
The court ordered Rozzaimi to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
