KK Mart Outlet In UM Splashed With Red Paint Amid Ham & Cheese Sandwich Controversy
The red paint was found on the store's door and entrance area.
A KK Mart outlet on the Universiti Malaya campus was vandalised amid controversy over the sale of ham and cheese sandwiches bearing misused halal logos
Brickfields police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood stated that an employee reported red paint marks on the store's doors at approximately 12:50am yesterday, 21 January, as reported by the New Straits Times.
In response to the vandalism, Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY) president Lim Jing Jet remarked that, while it remains unclear if the act was linked to the controversy, such extreme actions disrupt social harmony.
"If anyone wishes to protest against KK Mart, such extreme actions are not an appropriate means of expression.
"Vandalising property may seem like a minor offence, but can still fall under the destruction of property as outlined in Section 425 of the Penal Code," said Lim.
He also raised concerns about campus safety, questioning, "If even a chain convenience store like KK Mart can be vandalised on campus, are other areas and the safety of every student also threatened?"
He urged the administration to implement preventive measures, such as enhancing monitoring facilities and strengthening security patrols, to ensure a safer campus environment.

The Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) had previously confirmed that the sandwiches sold on campus and its manufacturing company lack halal certifications
The supplier, Shake and Bake Café Sdn Bhd, had previously claimed that the sliced meat used in the sandwiches was certified halal by JAKIM.
However, the religious department clarified that even if the sliced meat is halal-certified, the halal status does not extend to the whole sandwich.
On Monday, 20 January, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the chairperson of the Malaysian Halal Council, said that the government would leave it to the authorities to address the issue.
