KL Cops Discipline 'Basikal Lajak' Teens With Squats On New Year's Eve
21 teenagers were caught riding their modified bicycles recklessly.
The police and the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) apprehended 21 teenagers for riding modified bicycles recklessly during a roadblock at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah on New Year's Eve
Aged between 14 and 17, the teenagers were found riding without essential safety features such as brakes, bells, and lights reported Bernama.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said they were also competing recklessly with one another.
Their actions violated the Road Traffic Rules (Rule 42) LN 165/59, which allow for the confiscation of their bicycles under Section 112 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
To discipline them, officers had the group perform squats on the spot, emphasising the need for younger individuals to respect and follow traffic laws
A video shared by the Royal Malaysian Police's Facebook page showed the teens performing squats on the roadside under police supervision.
"Our intention is to ensure that young people comply with and respect road traffic laws and regulations," the police said, urging the public to prioritise their safety and that of others on the road.
Meanwhile, netizens praised the police for their approach, calling it an effective lesson for the youths involved
"Well done, PDRM. I warned my child two days ago [not to] mix with these illegal bicycle racers," one user commented.
"Congratulations, PDRM. This is a good initiative for education and prevention. Keep it up, PDRM and JPJ," another wrote.
"Thank you, PDRM. The Education Ministry needs your support. Hopefully, this will be a valuable experience for the students involved," one user remarked.
