"Serves Him Right" — Hit-And-Run Victim's Relative Says After Suspect's Car Catches Fire
The suspect was driving a petrol-powered Mercedes-Benz.
A man has criticised the Mercedes-Benz driver involved in a hit-and-run incident that left his brother-in-law severely injured on the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) yesterday, 15 December
In an Instagram post on Sunday, the man revealed that his brother-in-law was rushed to the emergency ward at Hospital Kuala Lumpur following the accident.
"We received information that the [Mercedes-Benz] caught fire at the Wangsa Maju toll plaza after the hit-and-run incident. Serves him right.
"If anyone has information about the owner of the [Mercedes-Benz], please reach out to me. A police report has been filed. I just want to know who the cowardly hit-and-run driver is," read the post.
Speaking to Astro Awani today, 16 December, the victim's sister, Syahrizah Saini, said her brother is still in critical condition, suffering from uncontrollable bleeding on his face and apparent memory loss.
Below is the dashcam footage capturing the hit-and-run incident:
Syahrizah explained that when she filed a police report against the Mercedes-Benz driver, the police officers realised that the same driver had just lost his car in a fire
"After [my police report, the police] called the driver.
"Initially, he did not admit [that he was involved in the hit-and-run]. But after the police told him that they had evidence, he asked about the victim's current condition," Syahrizah told Astro Awani.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) head ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the driver has since been arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
According to the New Straits Times, the driver narrowly escaped death when the car burst into flames at KM18 of the SPE near the Wangsa Maju toll plaza. The Kuala Lumpur fire and rescue department was alerted about the fire at 1.38pm.
Below is a video showing the vehicle engulfed in flames:
The car, which appears to be a non-electric vehicle GLE 43, was completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
