This 'Kiasi' Passenger Aboard An SIA Flight Came Prepared For Any Possible Turbulence
"Turbulence helmets".
A photo of a female passenger wearing what appears to be a bicycle helmet aboard a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight has gone viral
The photo was captioned, "She came prepared for any possible turbulence," by the uploader, who shared it on the popular Singaporean subreddit group, r/sgsecret, last week.
It is possible the woman was taking extra precautions after SQ321, an SIA flight from London, encountered severe turbulence, resulting in the death of one passenger and multiple injuries.
The Boeing plane, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was battered by turbulence on 21 May, flinging passengers and crew around the cabin and slamming some into the ceiling.
In the comments section, while many made fun of the woman for being kiasi, others said they couldn't blame her given the recent news
"She never brings a parachute, not prepared enough," commented one netizen sarcastically.
"Need a full body suit with padding and parachute. Never take it off," joked another.
"Budget SAF helmet," said one, while another chuckled, saying he now understands why his wife wants his old Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) helmet.
"The brain damage already exists," stated one netizen, implying that the woman was stupid.
Others who suggested wearing the seat belt were told that it may not be enough, as luggage dropping and hitting their heads from the overhead compartment during the turbulence is a legitimate concern.
"She is definitely being wary and rightfully so. A seat belt may not be enough. A helmet protects against any head injuries. I am getting my children to don one each," said one.
"I shall do this as well. Even without turbulence, it would be safer considering how carelessly many passengers store their items. Once, a man took his backpack off the overhead compartment and his tumbler slipped off and fell on my shoulder. He didn't even notice that it hit me and went off.
"Then when the flight was touching down, the overhead compartment sprung open. Considering how careless people are, I think we need to take additional measures to protect ourselves," said another.
Meanwhile, one netizen joked that "turbulence helmets" could be a good new business idea.
"I give you… Air Heads!"
Others pointed out that while the helmet may protect her head, it wouldn't safeguard her neck or spine, so wearing one is useless
